Thread Cutting is an operation that uses a single-point tool to produce a symmetrical helical thread form on a cylinder or cone. The process can be done to create internal or external threads on the surface of the workpiece. In external thread cutting, the piece can either be held in a chuck, or mounted between two centers. With internal thread cutting, the piece is held in a chuck. Before the workpiece is cut, the single-point tool is ground down to the shape needed and is put in place securely in a tool holder. The tool moves up the piece from the bottom taking chips of the workpiece with each pass. Five to seven light cuts are taken in order to create the correct depth of the thread.
